Most cyclists who suffer head injuries due to a fall aren’t wearing helmets at the time of the incident. Though 29% of adults and 42% of youth cyclists always wear helmets when they ride, those who choose not to do so could face serious risks. 78% of adults and 88% of injured cyclists aren’t wearing helmets when they fall.
Wearing a helmet while on the road greatly lowers the risks of injury, hospitalization, and death as the result of a cycling accident. One of the best ways to stay safe while riding is to wear a helmet, and one of the best ways to make helmets more widely used is to improve their effectiveness while lowering overall costs for the consumer.
Helmet Innovations on the Way
In October of 2020, Motorcycle and Powersports News announced that the benefits of Finite Element Analysis are now being put to use to produce stronger and more effective bike helmets. The use of FEA during the prototype phase has already greatly reduced the amount of time projects have spent in research and development.
Developing new helmets has always been a demanding task lined with uncertainties, even for the most experienced. Multiple design iterations and a lengthy testing procedure can make the helmet manufacturing process expensive and time-consuming.
Due to advances such as FEA, stronger and more protective helmets are coming on the market more quickly than ever. Even better, thanks to the cost-effective use of FEA, they’re often more affordable than the older, less-efficient models!
